The process of getting a closet organized is fairly standard. There are, however, some smart hacks that you can use for men’s clothing items in particular that will keep them streamlined and in better condition. From choosing the right type of hanger to getting hats and sneakers in order, try out the following ideas to achieve the ultimate organization for your (or your man’s) closet.

1. No more wire hangers

Or the velvet kind, for that matter. Men’s items, from button up shirts to bulky jeans, tend to do better on heavier hangers. Slimline wooden hangers provide the best of both worlds as they’re sturdy yet still space saving. For pants, opt for metal open ended hangers that allow any type to slide on and off with ease.

2. Designate each drawer

Every drawer, whether in the dresser or closet, should be assigned a specific purpose so items stay sorted and easy to find. Popular men’s categories that should (or could) be folded into drawers include:

  • underwear

  • socks

  • pajamas

  • athletic clothes

  • sweatpants

  • bathing suits

Try using expandable drawer dividers to further organize subcategories within drawers (such as dress socks from athletic socks) and file fold whenever possible. You can also add labels to the inside lip of each drawer so there’s little confusion about what’s inside.

3. Sort by sport

For the hobby enthusiast, it might make sense to dedicate a section in the closet to each pastime. As an example, rather than mixing in golf specific shirts with everyday polos (or golf pants with regular slacks), keep all golf attire in one area. And for those who cheer on their favorite teams in a variety of jerseys or sweatshirts, store them together for quick retrieval on game day.

4. Hang up hats (and other accessories)

Have some empty wall space in the closet? Consider installing a couple of hat racks (or an over the door organizer) to keep baseball caps in line. Arrange them by color, sport/team, or just in order of favorites. Regardless of the method, they’ll all be easy to see and grab once they’re hung up.

Similarly, belts and ties should have their designated spot where they can be found. Rather than stuffing them into a drawer or draping them over any old hanger, upgrade to a hanging cedar organizer or swivel belt hanger. Tip: before deciding on an organizer, count how many belts or ties you own (after decluttering, of course!) so you can make sure it has the right capacity.

And for those miscellaneous men’s accessories (think golf gloves, bolo ties, tuxedo cumberbunds, watches, scarves, and so on), give them their own special place as well. A valet box is perfect for safekeeping smaller items while a labeled basket on a closet shelf can easily hold larger soft items like winter gear.

5. Stack shoes to save space

While men generally own less pairs than women, their shoes are often bigger and more cumbersome. Place everyday footwear on a rack with tall shelves to accommodate styles like high top sneakers and work boots. If needed, turn each pair toe to heel so they fit on the shelf more comfortably. Stack less often worn pairs on a high closet shelf using either large (up to men’s size 13) or extra large (up to men’s size 16) drop front shoe boxes.
