People frequently ask where they can take their donations after decluttering their home. I’ve discovered over the years that people will often clean out their closets or other unwanted items, bag them up, and then let them sit in their garage for months or even years just because they don’t know what to do with them. Yikes!
First off, when you work with Libby and Labels, we’ll handle dropping off all the donations for you so you don’t have to worry about it. We’ll even send you a donation receipt if you want one. Our goal is to help you get those unwanted items all the way out of your house and into new hands.
Secondly, for those of you tackling smaller decluttering projects on your own, here’s my *non-comprehensive* list of Dallas donation drop-off locations. I recognize there are numerous resale stores, local organizations, and donation opportunities out there, so this is just a list of places I’ve found to be consistently reliable and convenient for accepting donations. All comments are mine and are not sponsored, so be sure to check each organization’s website for updated information and donation guidelines.
When dropping off donations, it’s important to take into consideration the proximity of the donation drop-off, what items the organization will take, and any specific cause you prefer to support. To keep it as simple as possible, I recommend weighing in proximity in addition to making sure the place will take all of your items. Nothing is more time consuming than having to drive to multiple places across the metroplex to drop off different categories of donations at each place.
With that in mind…
Here are My 8 go-to donation spots:
The Salvation Army has drop-off locations across the DFW Metroplex with convenient hours of operation. You can also schedule a truck to pick up your donations for free, but be aware these are often scheduled out several days or weeks in advance. They also accept furniture as long as it is in good condition (not damaged, torn, or stained).
Everyone has their opinions about Goodwill, but regardless, they have many locations and will accept just about anything you have to donate, except furniture and baby equipment. So if you’re ready to finally get those bags out of your garage, you might want to consider Goodwill.
Although this is a one location operation, it is a convenient option for residents of North Dallas. Their resale shop and donation drop-off is located in the southeast corner of Marsh Ln and Forest Ln. Check their website for current hours of operation and specific donation guidelines.
The Genesis Benefit Thrift Store, another one location shop, is located off Lemon Ave near Oak Lawn. All proceeds from the resale of items go directly to helping women affected by domestic violence. Check their website for updated hours and accepted items.
With two locations, one in Dallas off of W. Northwest Highway and one in Plano off of Central Expressway, this is another local option with convenient hours and an easy drop-off system.
This is ideal for any East Dallas resident seeking to stay local and support local as all their proceeds from the resale of donations go directly to helping local East Dallas families in need.
For any residents of Rockwall County, Helping Hands is a simple, convenient drop-off location. Be sure to check their website for donation days and hours as they differ from other places.
Lastly, Recycle2Support is an all-encompassing donation pick-up and drop-off organization directly supporting numerous local organizations. You can drop off your items (including furniture) to any of their locations across DFW or you can schedule a next-day free pick-up of your items (excluding furniture). For more information, check out their website.
A few final things to know before donating your unwanted items:
If something is torn, broken, or stained, most places will just throw it out, so spare them the hassle and just throw it away yourself.
Unfortunately no place (that I know of) will accept your box tv. To get rid of these, your options are to call a junk hauler or find a local electronics recycling facility.
The volunteers/staff of these places will be forever grateful to you if you keep pairs of shoes tied together by their shoe laces or with a rubber band.
Transport your items for donation in a bag or box. Some places require this, but it’s best to do this regardless as it makes things easier to hand off.
Many places will not accept baby equipment such as carseats or cribs because of frequent safety recalls and the liabilities involved in reselling these things. If an organization offers home services to their clientele in addition to having a resale shop, they may take these items to give directly to their clients. Be sure to call an organization first to ensure it will accept the items. If you have baby items you’re looking to donate, consider reaching out to North Dallas YoungLives, a local organization serving teen moms and my personal recommendation for those wanting their baby equipment to go to good use.
