How to Declutter Around Your Kitchen Sink

Let’s face it, the area around the kitchen sink can easily become an eyesore. There’s hand soap, dish soap, sponges, a scrub brush, paper towels, maybe a plant or two, and often dishes either in the sink or sitting out to dry.

This is not to mention the water splashes that come with utilizing each of these items, quickly leading to grime build-up and the necessity for frequent cleaning.

So how do you eliminate the visual clutter and make regular cleaning simple and easy?

Here are 3 steps to tidying up around your kitchen sink:

  1. Eliminate.

What items can you relocate or eliminate from residing on the countertop area surrounding the kitchen sink? Keep out only the items used most frequently.

  2. Establish a Home.

Prevent pools of water from collecting on your countertop by establishing a home for wet scrub brushes and sponges.

I’ve seen a variety of solutions, so do what works best for you. However, be sure to take into consideration a few things when selecting a home for kitchen scrub brushes:

Is the brush or sponge located in a place where it can easily air out and dry when not in use? Where is the water dripping? Is it sitting upright in a cup on the counter but ultimately just dripping dirty water back on the countertop? Is it dripping over the sink but sitting directly under the water where it constantly gets splashed even when not in use? Is the brush attached to the sink wall by suction cups which continually come unstuck? Be sure to consider all aspects of your current setup.

For my (Libby’s) sink, I searched for a while for just the right solution. I have a large sink, so I wanted the scrub brush to live within the sink to prevent water from collecting on the countertop as much as possible. I didn’t like the suction cup solutions as those never seemed to stay up. I also wanted something that would be versatile for both a scrub brush and a sponge as I cycle through using both. Finally, I wanted the brush to have ample airflow with the handle easily accessible for grabbing when needed. (No one wants to have to touch dirty bristles in order to retrieve a scrub brush stored upright. Yuck!)

I ultimately decided to go with this scrub brush sling, and it’s been the perfect solution. I love how it’s bendable and customizable to hold different size scrubbers but also sturdy enough to remain in place once positioned accordingly. Plus the color options allowed me to select one that would blend in with my sink faucet. I chose black to match my faucet, but it comes in white too.

  3. Contain.

Corral soaps together onto a dish to not only give them an established home but also to catch any water runoff. It’s way easier to wipe down a small dish than to scrub the counter grout. Plus it adds a touch of stylish decor which helps make the area more aesthetically pleasing.

I chose this dish because I liked the simple, versatile style as well as how easy it is to clean. Now whenever I do dishes, I can’t help but feel refreshed as I admire a clutter free sink.
