WFH: Work from home. The new acronym for this new reality so many of us are facing.

By now you’ve most likely had to create a space in your home to work from. Not everyone has the luxury of having an established home office or extra bedroom, so chances are your “home office” space now serves multiple functions.

Maybe your new setup is in your bedroom, so you now have one space for both working and sleeping. For some it might be the dining room table, so the space must function as both an office and a place to eat. Wherever your setup might be, here are three tips for staying organized and sane while you WFH.

  1. Maintain zones

Keep the different functions of each room contained to specific zones. If you work from the kitchen table, keep half for work and half for meal breaks. If your workspace is in your bedroom, keep the work area contained to a desk and one side of the room. If you’re limited to a living room, designate an area of the room for work to prevent it from taking over the whole common space.

  2. close out each work day

Straighten up before leaving “the office” at the end of each day. If your desk is in your bedroom, tidy up the papers, return pens to their home, and close down the laptop. This will prevent you from subconsciously feeling overwhelmed and being reminded of work during your off hours, especially if the area is one of the last things you see before going to sleep or the first thing you see when you wake up.

If you take up a corner of the dining room table and can’t recreate your office each day, still make a point to straighten up as much as possible before ending the work day. It will help to transition the room from being your office during the day to being a communal eating place in the evenings.

  3. Consider Simple, Portable Solutions

Obviously you don’t want to invest a ton since this is only for a season, but you also don’t want to lose your mind from a lack of organization. Consider what type of simple, temporary solutions you can implement to maximize and maintain organization.

One of my favorite portable office organizing solutions is this Clear Open-Top File Storage Box.

It’s easy to carry and great for quick access, no matter if it’s stored in a cabinet or on your desk. Whether you need to contain multiple notebooks or want an easy way to file and transport important papers, this box is the perfect simple solution for any temporary space.
